Cellulite

Cellulite

You may have noticed uneven skin around your thighs, hips, or buttocks, and this is known as cellulite. It can be described as having a cottage cheese or orange peel texture, and it can be either mild (where you can only see it if you pinch the skin in an area) or more severe (where the skin appears bumpy without the need to pinch). Cellulite is a very common, harmless skin condition, that predominantly effects women due to their different fat and muscle distribution, in fact it has been found to affect 80-90% of women. Many women do find the appearance of cellulite concerning, and there are treatments that can help to improve the appearance of the skin; however, it is really important to remember that cellulite is very common and harmless.

What causes cellulite?

Although, the cause of cellulite has not been fully established, it is thought to simply be caused by a build-up of fat underneath the skin. Cellulite is caused by the fibrous connective cords that attach the skin to the underlying muscle, and the fat lying between them working against each other. The tough cords pull down from the skin, while the fat cells push up against the skin, causing an uneven and dimpled appearance.

The amount of cellulite that you have can be based on your genetics, body fat percentage, muscle tone and age, however people of all ages and weights can get cellulite.

Weight Loss

Bodies of all sizes and shapes can have cellulite, and although extra weight can make them more visible, weight loss could have a minor effect on the appearance of cellulite. For some, losing weight reduces the amount of cellulite you see, however, if any loose skin appears, the cellulite may be more noticeable.

Creams & Lotions

Research has shown that some creams and lotions may have an effect on the appearance of cellulite, including those with caffeine or retinol. Daily application of products containing caffeine may dehydrate cells, which has the potential to make the cellulite less obvious. Whereas product that contain 0.3% retinol can help thicken the skin which may reduce the appearance of cellulite.

Exercise

By building muscle, and reducing your body fat percentage, it can make the skin look smoother and firm, making the cellulite less noticeable. Skin tone can improve, reducing the visible dimpling caused by cellulite.

Treatments for cellulite

Cellu-Erase

This minimally invasive procedure where a micro-blade tool is used to separate the bands of fibrous connective tissues and this is then followed by mesotherapy.

Body Contouring

A combination of cryolipolysis, cavitation, radiofrequency and shockwave can improve the appearance of cellulite by destroying the fat cells beneath the skin. This then causes them to break down and get absorbed by the body.

Carboxytherapy

During this aesthetic procedure, carbon dioxide is injected beneath the skin, to increase blood flow in the area and produce more collagen and cell growth. This treatment is clinically shown to instantly destroy fat cells, while making the area look firmer and cellulite reduced.
