Growth Factors
WHAT ARE GROWTH FACTORS?
How do they work?
Several clinical studies have highlighted that topically applied growth factors have shown improvements in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, uneven skin texture and pigmentation. As growth factors have a relatively large molecular size, there is debate to how these proteins enter the skin. When growth factors have been applied to the skin in higher concentrations, either alone or combined with vitamins and peptides, this has been show to stimulate fibroblasts and produce new collagen.
Growth factors may be derived from human stem cells (often a combination of growth factors in unspecified concentrations), bio-engineered or obtained from genetic modification (such as human endothelial growth factor obtained from barley). As well as human growth factors, there is research being conducted on bio-mimetic products that resemble human growth factors and often of plant origin. However, it is uncertain whether these ‘similar’ proteins can actually produce the same response in the body.
Growth factors used alongside micro-needling or laser resurfacing, have shown to be more effective than using within a serum or cream alone as these treatments will encourage better product penetration.
Why should I use growth factors?
When human growth factors are included in serums, lotions, and other topical skin care products, they can trigger our skin’s natural healing response. When delivered to an area of the nerves, skin, tissue, or cartilage, they read the signals of neighbouring cells, and cell reproduction and repair.
Using growth factors in your daily regime has many benefits when fighting the signs of ageing skin. In controlled studies, growth factors have shown to improve skin tightness, elasticity, and texture. As a result of new collagen synthesis, fine lines may appear reduced, and discolouration and uneven tone may improve.
