Post Procedure

Post Procedure

If you are considering a cosmetic procedure, whether it is a superficial skin peel or more invasive laser resurfacing treatment, your practitioner or therapist should always consult you to discuss what skincare you are using and advise on aftercare, including any products that should be used. Many cosmetic procedures can provide additional benefits if the skin is properly prepared prior to treatment and by the use of correct products afterwards. Similarly, there may be certain ingredients that you are currently using that could be detrimental to use before or after as they may interfere with the treatment, the results or the healing process.

A word of warning...

As there are so many different cosmetic treatments available and even individual procedures can have huge variabilities depending on the practitioner and patient, it is impossible to provide comprehensive advice and one size does not fit all. For example, the strength and composition of a chemical peel, energy and parameters used for laser procedures, depth of microneedling and products used for mesotherapy or skin infusion treatments. It is essential that you have a full consultation prior to treatment which includes any products you are using or medication that you are taking to ensure there are no contra-indications.

Post Procedure Skincare

Retinols

It is generally recommended to stop using any products containing retinol for a few days before and a week after any procedure that causes moderate skin trauma or if the skin surface is breached as this can lead to aggravation, redness and sensitivity. Generally, the more invasive, the longer this period should be. For people who have been taking the oral form of Vitamin A (Roaccutane®), they may need to wait 6 months before they are suitable.

Exfoliating Products

These include alpha and beta-hydroxy acids and they are chemical exfoliants which help to remove the top layer of dead skin cells. Although exfoliating products may be given as a pre-peel skin preparation, it is essential to ensure that the treating practitioner or therapist is aware what you are using and what strength as chemical peels can cause burns, prolonged redness, irritation and herpetic outbreaks if they penetrate too deeply.

Sun Protection

Most commonly, sun protection should continue to be used prior to treatment and re-started straight afterwards. Many treatments interfere with the natural barrier of the skin, making it more prone to UV radiation and extra protection is often required. A sun protectant of at least SPF 50 should generally be used after many treatments. In many cases, an SPF will be applied by your therapist or practitioner before you even leave the clinic. In fact, certain treatments cannot be carried out if you have an active suntan or have been on a sun bed.

Moisturisers

When the skin barrier has been disrupted, the skin will lose more hydration than normal through trans-epidermal water loss. It is important that hydration is maintained in the skin to allow it to function and repair effectively and it is generally advised to continue or apply additional moisturiser following treatment.

Baume

In some cases, you may be given a post-procedure kit which will often include a baume. These often contain ingredients that are known to aid healing and reduce inflammation. If you have any skin sensitivities or allergies, it is advisable to discuss these prior to treatment.

Lightening Products

Certain procedures carry a risk of post inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) when abnormal pigmentation can develop in the skin in blotches as a result of the trauma from the treatment. This can occur with energy based devices, such as laser, or where the skin surface is breached and the risk is higher in darker skin types. Your practitioner or therapist may recommend that you use a product to help control pigmentation before and afterwards. Typical skincare ingredients used include hydroquinone, Vitamin C, arbutin, kojic acid, azelaic acid, mulberry extract and niacinamide.

Camouflage products

If bruising or redness is an issue, you may be advised to use a camouflage product to disguise it. However, a product should be used that still allows the skin ‘to breathe’ and not to clog or occlude it as it is recovering. Oxygenetix® is a good option in these cases and allows the skin to breathe and is available in multiple skin colours.

Make Up

For all but the most superficial procedures, it is advised not to apply make-up for at least 24 hours post-treatment. There are two main reasons for this, firstly to allow any inflammation to settle and secondly, to prevent infection. Make-up has been shown to harbour a host of bacteria and ideally freshly opened make-up only should be applied. In the same sense, make-up brushes and pads can also host a whole variety of germs that can cause an infection if applied to skin where the natural barrier has been disturbed.
