Acne is a common skin concern that causes spots and oily skin and affects most of the population at some point in their lives. Whilst it is assumed that acne is a complaint for young, teenage skins, this is not always the case and women are more likely to be affected by acne as adults.
Acne is caused by a combination of hormones, oily skin and bacteria and causes spots on the face to appear and sometimes on the back and chest as well. Sebaceous glands in your skin produce sebum which helps to keep your skin soft and lubricated. However, when these glands become clogged by excessive sebum, dead skin cells and bacteria, acne often appears as a result. Overproduction of oil is often caused by hormonal changes which is why acne is more common during puberty, pregnancy, the menopause and the menstrual cycle.
