Menopause Skin

Menopause Skin

The menopause officially begins one year after a woman’s last period and it describes a set of symptoms and conditions which occur naturally after a drop in hormone levels, typically between the ages of 45 and 55 (or even sooner). During the menopause there may be some noticeable changes in your skin and hair. Generally, your skin becomes drier, thinner and slacker and you may notice more hair growth on areas of the face and less on the scalp.

There is no way to stop menopause, however, there are things you may wish to do to alleviate the symptoms.

Pigmentation

After hormone levels plummet and your skin starts to change, signs of sun damage that you have endured throughout your life may start to appear, most commonly on your face, hands, arms, neck and chest area. These signs include abnormal hyperpigmentation known as age spots and lines and wrinkles.

Dry Skin

Your skin partially loses its ability to retain water which potentially leads to a rough appearance. This may be particularly noticeable in winter months or in arid conditions.

Wrinkles

Collagen is the most abundant protein in your body; it forms fibres which gives your skin structure. During menopause, collagen levels in your skin deplete and so it loses structure resulting in looser, slacker skin. Lower collagen levels in your skin can also cause depressions in your epidermis which turns into wrinkles.

Facial Hair

Caused by lower levels of female hormones, you may develop unwanted hair under your chin, on the upper lip and along your jawline. Your hair may simultaneously start to thin on the top of your head and your hairline may start to recede. This is normal for every woman and there is no way to prevent this however there are things you may do once you notice these changes.

Sensitive Skin

You may notice that your skin becomes more vulnerable in a number of ways. For example, after menopause the skin bruises more easily because each layer of your skin will become thinner. Furthermore, you could be more subject to irritated skin or rashes which is caused by a pH change in your skin that occurs around the age of fifty.

Skincare for menopause skin

Sun Protection

Protecting your skin from the Sun is by-far the most important thing you can do to prevent signs of damage (like age spots and wrinkles) but this doesn’t mean only protect your skin before menopause. During and after menopause you should use a suncream of 30 SPF or higher every day since your skin will be even more sensitive during this time!

Retinols

As for wrinkles, topical products containing retinoids (vitamin A derivatives) are great for boosting collagen production in the dermis and may help to prevent them from appearing.

Moisturisers

After menopause you should take care to moisturise after you wash and regularly throughout the day when your skin feels dry; well-moisturised skin will be less prone to breaks and bruises. Since your skin changes at this time, it may be a good idea to switch to a heavier moisturiser.

Vitamin C

Use products with vitamin C (ascorbic acid) to tackle hyperpigmentation – the vitamin C blocks the action of tyrosinase, which is the enzyme responsible for producing melanin and hence alleviates irregular pigmentation

Hyaluronic Acid

Topical products with hyaluronic acid are great for hydrating skin since it can bind up to one-thousand times its weight in water and readily penetrates the skin!

Mild Cleanser

Furthermore, on more sensitive areas of your skin such as your face, hands and chest you may want to use a mild cleanser instead of soap since soap could be drying out your skin.

Depending on your area of concern there are multiple treatments for menopausal skin, to refresh and rehydrate the skin or replace volume and reverse sagging!
