EYE CREAMS, GELS AND SERUMS
Constant movement and free radical damage can result in the delicate eye area looking tired and dull with signs of premature ageing. The earlier you start using an eye cream, the better you can fight the visible signs of fine lines and wrinkles, by keeping the eye area smooth and hydrated. Eye creams generally have a lighter formulation, making them perfect for the soft tissue without being too heavy. They come in many different formulations such as gels, creams or serums. Whilst using an eye cream has many benefits, it’s also important to not overuse products in the eye area, as this may lead to congesting the eyes and will likely make puffiness worse. When applying eye creams, take a small amount and gently apply, massaging away from the under eye.
Swelling or puffiness under and around the eyes are familiar components of the ageing process. As we get older, the skin surrounding the eye can become fragile with some of the muscles supporting your eyelids weakening. Normal fat can then start to accumulate in the lower eyelids, making them appear puffy. Furthermore, fat can also be lost naturally from the channel between the nose and eye (the ‘tear trough’) making it appear sunken, this can add to the appearance of swelling, as well as causing some darkness due to the hollowness.
Although ‘under-eye bags’ is not strictly a clinical term, it can result in an array of different appearances in the areas around the eye, including dark circles. Skin beneath the eye is relatively thin, making it more transparent and allowing underlying blood vessels to be seen more prominently, also resulting in a darker discolouration.
Improving the eye area
Sleep
Sleep is essential for the health of skin, not getting enough of it can cause your blood vessels to dilate leading to areas of darkness and puffiness. However, sleeping can allow fluid to build up around the eyes. Our bodies continuously produce tears that are continually removed. During the night, the body can no longer drain the tears produced by blinking or the assistance of gravity, potentially leading to swelling and puffiness around the eyes in the morning.
Smoking
Nicotine can disrupt the bodies sleeping patterns which can in turn lead to puffiness in the tissues surrounding the eye. As well, nicotine use can damage and destroy the collogen and elastic fibre that give the skin strength and maintain its tightness.
Alcohol
Excessive alcohol consumption can dehydrate your body, causing the skin to weaken and allow bags to form under the eyes. Alcohol has also been shown to dilate capillaries, leading to wrinkles and puffiness in the eye’s surrounding tissues.
Fluid Retention
Eating a salt heavy meal will cause you to retain fluid across your entire body. Salt naturally contains sodium which absorbs water, too much sodium will cause your body to retain and collect fluid in places including under your eye.
Top Tips

- Ensure you use sun protection in the delicate under eye region.
