Masks
What are face masks?
Face masks (or masques) are becoming increasingly popular and they are an essential skincare step to get glowing skin. Face masks have the power to deliver potent ingredients and treat nearly all skin conditions, which can include age spots, fine lines, clogged pores and dullness of the skin. Masks and their ingredients are kept in contact with the skin for longer, creating an occlusive layer that traps the moisture or ingredient between the skin and mask, and therefore allows the ingredients to penetrate in a short amount of time. Masks are different to serums and moisturisers, as the occlusive layer prevents some of the product from evaporating into the air, and therefore it has nowhere else to go but directly into your skin.
When deciding on a mask, it is important to consider your skin type and age, as acne-prone skin has different skincare needs than older, more delicate skin. There are many other things to consider, such as the skincare benefits and the different types of masks you would like to use – each with their own individual benefits.
Types of skin masks
Sheet Masks – All skin types, but especially dry skin
Sheet masks are the most common type of mask used, especially in recent times, and they are great for instant hydration. These are essentially cloth sheets with holes cut out for the eyes, nose, and mouth, and they can help aid dull and dehydrated skin. These are saturated with powerful ingredients that penetrate deeper into the skin, while aiding in hydration, and brightening the skin for a glowing complexion.
A sheet mask is perfect for people with dry skin and those with normal skin, who may need a moisture boost, however, always follow the instructions. If the sheet mask dries on your skin, it will strip away the moisture that the sheet mask was meant to be putting in.
Sheet masks have many benefits, including increasing the ingredient absorption, they are easy to use, and nowadays there is a sheet mask for virtually every skin type, tone, and concern.
Clay Masks – Acne prone skin and oily skin
Clay masks have been around for over 1800 years, and even used by Cleopatra. They can help to detoxify and draw out impurities and oils from the surface of the skin. Clay masks can unclog pores and decongest the skin, to give an instant glowing complexion.
Clay masks are made up of minerals that are considered beneficial to the skin, and they bind and pull-out impurities in the skin, which are then washed away as you rinse of the mask. They give the skin a deep cleanse, while removing excess oil from the pores, which makes them perfect for acne-prone, or oily skin.
Cream Masque – Acne prone skin
Cream masks are one of the gentlest forms of face masks, that help to remove dead cells, whilst toning the skin. These types of masks usually contain ingredients such as hyaluronic acid or salicylic acid to provide a boost of hydration, and will leave your skin feeling soft, smooth, and refreshed.
Gel Masks
These masks are lightweight in texture, and they are excellent for oily to normal skin types, and they can help to minimise oil and tighten the appearance of pores.
