Why should you use a toner?
Toners are great to use after cleansing, they help mop up remaining residue, reduce the appearance of pores and give a fresher, smoother look to the face. Toners can be used in everyone’s skincare routine, although those likely to gain the most benefits are acne-prone or oilier skin types.
Toners can be a terrific addition to a skincare regime for their many benefits. They can help regulate the over production of sebum, the oil secreted from the skin, reduce the appearance of large pores and to rebalance pH and rehydrate. They are also a good way of adding other active ingredients into your skin care regime without overloading your skin.

Dry Skin
A dry, dehydrated skin can often feel tight, flaky and rough textured. Look for ingredients that boost hydration levels, such as hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that restores the skins moisture levels. For irritated dry skins, soothing ingredients such as aloe vera and rose water can calm and help restore moisture.
Normal/Combination Skin
Normal skin types can often use almost any type of toner and it will be down to personal preference whether hydration or some exfoliation is desired. Combination skins will usually have patches of oiliness and dryness and depending on the main concern, a suitable toner can be selected.
Oily Skin
Oily skin will typically display large open pores and may develop a shine throughout the day. Oily and acne-prone skin types would benefit most from an exfoliating toner, containing salicylic acid, a beta hydroxy acid, which has gentle exfoliating properties to lift away dead skin cells and oil from the surface of the skin giving the skin more clarity.
Sensitive Skin
Some sensitive skins can be reactive to toners due to their astringent nature. In these cases, toning mists may be a better option as they do not put friction or heat on a reactive skin. Rose water toners and hyaluronic acid toners are most appropriate for this skin type as they are gentle and effective when rebalancing.
Top Tips
Whilst toners traditionally are used for this purpose post-cleanse, toning mists and sprays are the perfect handbag refresher for warm days. They are also ideal to use in the Summer months, to swap out heavier creams and serums for lighter toners with active ingredients.
In the past, toners have gained a bad reputation due to them often featuring harmful, stripping ingredients such as alcohol. Toners that include alcohol would often dehydrate the skin giving a mattifying finish that would feel clean but be damaging to the skin overtime.
