Vegan Skincare

Vegan Skincare

Vegan diets are increasingly common with a growing number of people choosing to adopt a vegan lifestyle. Many non-vegan consumers also purchase vegan products as they are often created using organic or natural ingredients that can be milder on skin. These product suit those with more sensitive skin as well as those prone to allergies or specific skin reactions.

With the increase in the number of people choosing to become vegan, the availability of vegan skincare products has also risen. It is important that you choose products carefully, it is easy to assume that because a product does not contain any animal derivatives or ingredients that is vegan. This is not the case, there are several products that are marketed as being vegan friendly, however the product itself has been tested on animals.

How do you know if a skincare product is suitable for vegans?

Vegan

To be classified as a vegan skincare, the product must be certified by the Vegan society or Vegan action. This shows that the product has been verified and is suitable for vegans.

Cruelty Free

The leaping bunny logo can be found on products which have been certified as cruelty free and have not been tested on animals but may not be vegan.

Benefits of Vegan skincare

BETTER FOR ANIMALS

Most Vegan products have not been tested on animals, but if you are making a choice to help our living creatures, make sure that your products also contain the cruelty free logo as well as the Vegan logo.

BETTER FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

Vegan skincare providers are usually more conscious about the environment and the world where we live. They are more likely to try to be carbon neutral, reduce packaging, use recycled materials where possible and use natural and organic materials.

GENTLE ON THE SKIN

Skincare containing non-animal products or bi-products are generally gentler on the skin and consist of calming, botanical ingredients which are less aggressive and usually suitable for all skin types.

VITAMINS AND ANTIOXIDANTS

Plant-derived skincare products are often rich in vitamins, antioxidants and minerals essential to our skin and lower in toxins. Toxic substances accumulate as you go up the food chain, so plants will always be more toxin-free than animals!

What to avoid

Gelatine

This is a good dietary source of collagen, which helps to maintain healthy skin, but is obtained from boiling skin, tendons, ligaments or bones of animals – which is absolutely not Vegan!

Lanolin

Mainly derived from sheep wool, it is the waxy substance that coats the wool to provide a water-proof layer.

Guanine

A component of our DNA and used in skincare, found naturally in excrement and dead bodies of birds, bats and fish scales.

Beeswax

Used as a thickener and emulsifier in cosmetics, obtained from honeybees.

What is Vegan skincare?

A skincare product that has been certified as vegan does not contain any animal derived bi-products or ingredients. Animal products commonly found in products typically include honey, beeswax, squalene and lanolin.
